outdoor boudoir

Scheduling a boudoir session is liberating. It’s exciting. Sometimes, it’s a step out of your comfort zone. And it’s OH-SO-WORTH-IT!!!

And I love it when we take it one step further and go outside. Taking it all off and running free outdoors, takes the experience to the next level.

I think this 38 year-old Mom of a 4 year old and 6 year old, would agree…it is truly an unforgettable experience.

A Monster Time

I had a Saturday off. A rarity these days. So on a whim I packed up the kids and we went to the pumpkin patch. And when I say on whim, I can prove it by the clothes my kids were wearing. Look at them! HA! On the way out the door I glanced into my camera bag and reached for the rebel. The 35mm rebel that I purchased for $12 on e-bay. True story. Best purchase I ever made. A cheap way to dip my toes into the film world. So cheap that the film I load into the camera cost more than camera itself. Another true story.

It is my belief that photographers are strange creatures. We love to go to work. Love it. We love it so much that on our days off, we shoot for fun. My idea of shooting for fun is shooting film. The mystery of it makes it so exciting. We are so used to that instant gratification digital gives us. You know what I mean…you’re at a party, all your friends line up for a group shot and then they instantly, almost instinctively huddle around the camera to see the picture on the back of the camera. With film, there is discipline. You can’t delete the shot if someone was blinking and retake it. It is what it is…and the blinkers aren’t revealed until the film gets developed. And that is what I love about film. It’s real. The images contain real moments. Not moments done over because someone was blinking.

These are things I find myself doing more often than I care to admit…I create do over moments…. when it comes to my family photos. I always feel like I’m trying to make them perfect. I fear that my daughters won’t look back through old albums and laugh at the funny face they were making or images of themselves in an awkward stance with un-brushed hair, as my sister and I do. Those are the pictures that give us belly laughs and bring us back to our childhood. Real moments.

From a photographer’s standpoint I can bore you with all the other reasons I love film. The tones. The dynamic range. The grain.

I can complain about my overexposed images because I was using 400 film, shooting at 1.4 with my $12 camera that only has a max shutter speed of 1/2000 at high noon (oh yeah, I gave exposing for the shadows a whole new meaning). And because I over exposed Portra, my skin tones are a little yellow. But for those same complaints, I love film. Because if I shot at those setting with digital, I’d have a whole lot more to complain about than yellow skin tones.

So though I never post my film images and hardly make personal posts on the blog anymore, I felt the need to share our pumpkin patch pictures. They hold a double meaning for me. I was experimenting with film and I was just a mom snapping some pictures of her kids, not trying create the perfect composition and expression. Just real moments. For fun.

Jaxson Turns One

Last month my precious god-son Jaxson turned one! You may remember his mama’s maternity session. Or his newborn session. And he’s had a few more session in between that I may not have had a chance to blog. But as I post these images, I can hardly believe my eyes! He’s grown so much!!
